Crooked Fence Brewery Grand Opening | Boise Event Photographer

It's always super exciting when a friend takes on a new challenge and succeeds! My friend Kelly and and his 2 business partners are now in the beer brewing business and boy are they good at what they do!!

Crooked Fence Brewing is based out of Garden City Idaho and they had their grand opening last Saturday. It was a hit! There was an amazing turnout, and everyone had a great time. It never ceases to amaze me the creativity and ingenuity that Danielle with Sona Creative possesses. Her events are the best production quality I've experienced. The Boise Center on the Grove is the only convention center in Boise large enough to host this event, yet she transforms the space so you feel as if you've never been in this room before.

It was an honor to photograph the Idaho Business Review's Women of the Year Event last night, and I look forward to sharing more images from this prestigious event soon!

When you realize how perfect everything is you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky.

I keep going back to these two quotes. First I read Buddha's, then I read Allen's. Back and forth, back and forth. And then I decided that Allen's should really be read first as Buddha's is a continuation. We all have moments of being stuck.

Stuck in our head.
Stuck in a rut.
Stuck in the same place as yesterday and the day before...
Just.
Stuck.

I love the wisdom in Allen's quote. Once we can accept the fact that what we are dealing with is unpleasant, and the reality that there is little we can do about the unpleasantness, transformation begins. I've heard it described as being the observer of your own reality. If you can 'step aside' to observe your situation, the simple removal of self opens up the situation for transformation. Then, as Buddha states, you'll realize how perfect everything is and tilt your head back and laugh.

We are all continually growing, and I am no different. Daily, sometimes it seems hourly, I have to remind myself to be the observer of my reality. And once I do it's makes a world of difference.

Tips for Great Engagement Photos | Boise Wedding Photograher

Engagement photos were originally used to announce a couple’s engagement inthe local newspaper, but that tradition has gone the way of hope chests anddowries… a nice thought, but many people don’t bother anymore.

There are still many great reasons to book an engagement sessionthough!

Many couples use their engagements as save-the-date cards, or send a printedimage along with their invitations. And some couples use the images during theirreception as centerpieces, or decorations on the gift table. But perhaps the best reason to book anengagement session is to get to know your wedding photographer better. The more comfortable you are around yourphotographer the more natural your images will look. It’s important to feel like yourself and letyour love shine in your photos.

I have a few tips to help you and your fiance look and feel great for yourengagement session:

Location, location, location
Meaningful places to you and your finance can be a fun idea for your session,but don’t be afraid to think outside the box. I love shooting in areas that offer interesting elements, lighting ortextures. A parking garage or alleywaymay not sound like a great spot for pictures, but you may be surprised at thebeautiful colors and textures that can be hiding there. Most importantly, make sure that the locationyou choose suits your style and personalities.

Clothes make the couple
Don’t be afraid of layers, color, accessories, stripes or polka dots! Let your style shine through, and keep inmind that you want to pop in these photos, and the easiest way to do that isthrough your clothing choices. The only“rule” I have is making sure that your outfit is appropriate for the settingyou choose. If you’d like some inspiration, check out my style board on Pinterest.

Hair and Makeup
Get both done by a pro and you'll not only look amazing, but the extraconfidence will shine through. If you are hiring a makeup artist for thewedding, they will likely want to do a practice run, and the day of yourengagement photos would be a great try out. If you are doing your own makeup,consider wearing matte since it photographs best, and a good rule of thumb iswearing twice the mascara you would normally wear.

Watch the weather—and the clock
A lot of clients mistakenly assume that lots of sun is good, but in fact it'snot. Often the light is too harsh during sunny afternoons and can castunflattering shadows on your face. Sometimes wind, light rain and fog can alsowork in favor of a session. Hands downthe best time to shoot is early morning and right before sunset. If these times work with your schedule, tryto incorporate them

Sweat the deets
Little details can add that extra sense of awe to a photo. They can be anythingfrom masks, signs, picnic baskets, birdcages or vintage suitcases. If you have ideas for a “theme” make sure tosuggest it in plenty of time to track down fun props and locations.

Let your love shine
Be candid and have fun with each other. Engagement sessions are really a funday out with your loved one, and there just happens to be a photographer there tocapture the moment. It’s the candid moments that turn out the best—so don't beafraid to show affection, laugh and jump for joy!

Gear for the occasion
I recommend bringing a comfortable pair of shoes or flip flops to wear whenwalking or hiking to the shoot location.

Most of all…Relax
It's important not to stress. It’s yourphotographer’s job to make sure your images reflect you and your fiancé at yourbest, and you’re job is to show up and have fun. Make sure to get a good nights sleep the night before your session, andtry not to eat anything too salty or heavy the day of.

Clients are often asking me what size of prints to order, and how to arrange them in their house. I love to figure out which prints to order and how to organize them! Creating artwork for your family's walls is a big part of what I do.

I came across this infographic on Pinterest the other day, and thought it was perfect for a blog post! There are some great ideas here for how to arrange your family's artwork for the biggest WOW.

The best way to arrange photos, of course, is to have a cohesive theme or feel for all the photos you group together. And the easiest way to make that happen is to book a shoot with me! ;)

Fashionable trash? With courage, anything’s possible

Millie Hilgert, also known as Miss Courageous, makes all things jewelry and accessories. And everything she makes used to be something else.

Whether you call it upcycling, recycling, repurposing, eco-friendly, crafting green, re-use, reinvent, or redesign, it ultimately comes down to having a new accessory made from something that reminds you of your childhood. From vintage game pieces – like Monopoly or Scrabble – to record vinyl, bottle caps and even altered LEGO bricks, Hilgert transforms pop culture into wearable and functional fashion accessories known as Pop Art.

“Pop Art,” said Hilgert, “as in pop caps, pop music, pop a lid, pop culture, and a pop of color.”
Her pieces range in variety nearly as much as her materials do. From necklaces, bracelets and rings to notebooks, belt buckles and wall clocks, her work is constantly evolving and new pieces are created regularly. One thing that doesn’t vary in her product line is the handmade quality she puts into her work. She pours her time and creativity into each piece and does all of her cutting and assembling by hand.

So what is Miss Courageous? The name Miss Courageous actually came from a song her husband wrote with his former band The Nixon Clocks.

“Even though I didn’t know him then, it seemed the song was written about me,” said Hilgert. “Miss Courageous is a mother, a sister, a friend, a mentor, an inspiration. She is strong, adventurous, brave, creative, independent, and heroic.”

Hilgert finds her inspiration in the world around her: nature, architecture, and in the materials themselves.

“The puzzle of figuring out how to transform a found object into something new and unique is part of the fun,” she said. That metamorphosis is what draws her to the process of upcycling. The vinyl she uses is carefully hand-cut into shapes for pendants and earrings. The game tiles are adorned with found images, paper, or reclaimed wallpaper samples, and turned into reversible bracelets and pendants or Scrabble tile earrings that swivel.

Bottle caps have images set into them and are filled with resin; they then become pendants, rings and key chains, among other things. Jar lids, pressure gages, Altoid tins, and a number of other objects all become carefully crafted accessories.

Hilgert loves the concept of transformation. The process of taking something unwanted and creating something desirable inspires her. “Nothing is better than the look on people’s faces when they see the finished product and realize what it used to be,” she said.

Hilgert began selling her pieces at the Capital City Public Market five years ago, and she continues to be there, rain or shine, every Saturday since. Being at the Market has allowed her to gain a local following where fans can easily find her to see what new pieces have been added to the Miss Courageous line.

The Market also lends itself to tourists visiting the area, and many are converted into online shoppers, visiting the Miss Courageous Etsy store once they return home.

Etsy is an e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items, as well as art and craft supplies. These items cover a wide range including art, photography, clothing, jewelry, edibles, bath and beauty products, quilts, knick-knacks and toys. The site follows in the tradition of open craft fairs, giving sellers personal storefronts where they list their goods for a fee of 20 cents.
It has been compared to a crafty cross between Amazon and eBay and your grandmother’s basement. Etsy allows Miss Courageous to reach a global market, and Hilgert has sold and shipped pieces all over the world.

In the past few years, Hilgert found the local market and online store blend nicely.
“When sales may be down locally, the economy of other countries may be doing well, so online sales are up. Both markets seem to be pretty consistent, but overall local is always best. Boise is great at supporting local,” she said.

I woke up this morning to an email from "Abe." Abe is a service that sends you an email summarizing what you posted in social media (in this case on facebook) one year ago today. While I'm not one to live in the past, this is a great tool for seeing the growth I've made, and/or reminder to keep growing and not become stagnant.

Today's email comprised of the following pictures:

One year ago today, I sat in the tattoo parlor with my good friend Jayme and added a permanent reminder to my body that I can do ANYTHING. I had accomplished my goal of finishing a marathon. I had trained, worked hard, set my mind to something I thought impossible, and with each small step proved to myself that I am strong enough.
Proved to myself that I am good enough.
And proved to myself that I am someone who does what she says she is going to do.

Demons in my head be damned, I did it.

One year later, I have the opportunity to prove it to myself once again. I've taken a leap of faith, and walked away from full time work. Some would call it madness, some would call it crazy and most would call it downright stupid.
But I choose to see it for what it is... an opportunity. An opportunity to stop posting entries like this one and embrace the life and career I want. An opportunity to stop living a life of default and embrace a life I've designed.

But I need your help.

You see, I'm scared to death. I'm scared to admit that I don't know how this is all going to work. I'm scared to admit that I have no money to make it work. I have bills and responsibilities just like everyone else, but without a clear plan on how to pay for them. But I will. I have no doubt that it will all work out, because that is what I've chosen to make happen.

So you may be sitting there wondering, how can I help? I'm glad you asked that question. You can help by allowing me to help you.

And how can I help you? I can help by stripping away all the preconceived notions about yourself. Yes, you may be thinner in 6 months, or your son's bruised cheek may heal and go away in another few weeks, and the terrible two's (or three's or four's) that your toddler is experiencing may make it more difficult to get that perfect picture.

But your family is growing and changing now.

What your family looks like today is perfect and beautiful, and I don't want you to forget it. It would be a disservice to put off taking photos until everything is perfect.
Because what is perfect?
Don't make perfection something unattainable.
Why not capture the real perfection that you all are now? Because that's how I see you.

The power of social media is amazing. Daily we are invited to know the details of our friends lives. Where they are, what they do, what they eat, what they feel, what they like, what they hate.
Everything.
Sometimes stuff we don't want to know.
But it's there.
And with the power of social media, the world is hugely connected. One suggestion from a friend on where to buy something (or where NOT to buy something) can ripple out quickly among all those who see it, and that now becomes the place to purchase X, Y and Z.

So, what I'm asking you to do is simply keep my studio top of mind. Check out my website (here) and if you like my work (and please, please, please only in you genuinely, truly like my work - because authenticity is HUGE to me) and you know of someone I can help by taking their photo, or designing something for their business let them know about me.

And please help yourself too by not allowing too much time to pass before you capture who you are. Make a lasting memory and share it with friends and family.
Embrace who you are, stand up and say, 'I am beautiful!'
Show off your amazing family and capture that horrible pair of worn jeans your teenager won't stop wearing and the blanket your 3 year old drags with her everywhere.
Spotlight your business and show everyone how you are making your own dreams come true.

I know without a doubt that Motormouth Studios will work. I need to just look at my foot and remember that with Perseverance, the strength that I posses and the friends that I have, all I have to do is take a step in the right direction each day.

This beautiful girl had already had her senior photos taken (not by me), but wanted a few with her horse. So her mom found out about my 30 minutes for $30 deal and asked if I could come out and snap some photos of them together. Of course I said, "YES!" and after many failed attempts (spring weather in Idaho can be a pain sometimes) we finally made it happen this past Sunday.

There are many more to come, but I couldn't help posting just a few early ones. How gorgeous are these two?!

The Dirty Dash 2012

Does running around Bogus Basin over hay bales, down slip-n-slides, through mud pits and chugging beer all while in costume with 500 of your closest friends sound like a good time to you? Well it does to me too!!

For the past 2 years I've participated in the Dirty Dash, and I can't wait to partake this summer once again! On August 25th it's time for Boise to get filthy!!

This race is like none other. Most are hard, most aren't fun, and never have I been so dirty before. This event is the only one I know of where pushing your friend down in mud, hoisting a stranger over a wall, and chugging a beer while running and being dressed as Scooby Doo all seems normal. It's where you can feel like a military bad ass traversing obstacles while letting your inner 6 year old run wild.

Bodega Beach | Fine Art Photography

Having grown up within an hour's drive to the Oregon Coast, to me a beach is cold, windy, rocky... and Heaven on earth. Bodega Bay (just north of San Fransisco) is, dare I say it, even more beautiful than my beloved Canon Beach though.

Made famous for Alfred Hitchcock filming of "The Birds," Bodega Bay is a quaint little town off a winding highway that hugs the California coastline. It was a quiet, relaxing and beautiful place to 'recharge my batteries.'

In homage to Hitchcock, I began with a shot of "the birds..."

It's always such a treat to receive an email from someone I've known in my past, who found out I take pictures and wants me to be their photographer. In this case, I received a message through facebook from someone I went to highschool with. We haven't seen each other since graduation... 10 years ago, eeps!! She lives in the same town as my parent's, so my traveling home for the Thanksgiving holiday seemed the perfect time to get together and take some photos of her 3 beautiful girls!

Their mommy's goal was to have just one good pic of the three together for her holiday card. I think we succeeded... a few times!

J & D Are Engaged | Boise Engagement Photographer

Darrelyn and I have known each other since the 6th grade. She was my first friend at a new school {even though she thought I was weird at first} and we've been close friends since.

Like most teenage girls, Darrelyn and I spent many hours talking to each other late into the night about who we would marry and how perfect our husbands would be. We talked about our dream weddings, who our attendants would be and where we would go on our honeymoons.

When she messaged me to say that she was engaged I was so excited! And the follow-up message asking me to be her engagement photographer excited me just as much! It's SO MUCH FUN to take photos of people I love.

We met in Twin Falls on the WINDIEST day ever and had a blast trying to find places to hide from the gale force winds. {seriously, the wind was crazy!} We finally gave up and I talked them into getting coffee at Starbucks and taking pictures while we were there. I'm so glad they played along because I've always wanted to do coffee shop photos and I love how they turned out.

The David Cook concert at the Knitting Factory in Boise was AWESOME! I've loved David since he first took the stage on American Idol, and was so excited to find out he was going to play in Boise. You're not technically supposed to take photos during the concert (I think... I carried my camera in and no one said anything??) but I couldn't help sneaking just a couple. You can tell how close I was to the stage here because I'm using a fixed lens with no zoom.

Great job David! If you ever happen to read this entry, please know that you completely made my night by looking at me in the first picture. This was a fun shoot! I met Christina through Team in Training last season, and when she asked me to take fall family photos for her, I was extremely honored. We messaged back and forth for a while trying to figure out where the best spot would be, what they should wear, etc. Finally we came up with the great idea of trying to photograph on the blue turf at BSU, and everyone would wear their Bronco gear.

Well, the team was practicing when we showed up, so we couldn't get on the field at first, but we had a great time shooting around the stadium, and eventually snuck in during the band's turn to practice.

Thanks for the memories Dealy family! It was a blast sneaking around with you!

(Notice in the last set of photos one of the kiddos was brave enough to sneak all the way onto the field with me. We couldn't leave without at least one shot on the blue!)

Renu MediSpa of Eagle had their annual client appreciation event at Banbury Golf Course in October. It was a great event with raffles, new product lines to explore, and FIREMEN! The Eagle Fire Department was there to sell/sign their calendar as a fundraiser for their burnout fund, and they were the hit of the night.

I'm almost out of cards. This is both a good thing and bad thing, well, maybe 'bad' is a bit too strong of a word, but you know what I mean. The good thing is that means another 100 people now have my card, but the downside is that I have to spend money to get more. But the other good thing is that I have the opportunity to redesign them! So I did.

I love the clean, minimalism of them. It's a bit symbolic of a clean slate for my business. I also wanted to highlight the fact that I don't just photograph, I also freelance as a writer with a few publications (and blog!) as well as design. I can't wait until they arrive.

I bit off a bigger chunk and ordered 500 this time.
A bit optimistic?
Yes.
But I'm ok with that.

Most of the boys are now in there 20's and doing there own thing, so getting all 6 together is a small miracle. One I'm proud to have been a part of.

There are often times as a photographer where I feel like I have the opportunity to give so much to others. It's the reason I take photos. But there are rare moments where I feel the clients give so much more to me than I ever could to them.

Mrs. Pearson was my 5th grade teacher, and since I went to an incredibly small school, I was blessed to have her as my English teacher again in the 7th and 8th grades. I fell in love with English because of her. I cannot read without catching errors and writing them down (something we used to get points for) or diagramming sentences in my head. She made the subject fun and come alive. She was the reason I majored in English Literature in college, and I was beyond honored when she emailed me asking me to take photos of her and her girls.

First of all, I couldn't believe her girls were in college now! When did they stop being 6? And second of all... what a fun group of gals! We had a blast laughing and playing around at BSU and the Depot. These gals definitely made it easy to capture fun and natural smiles.

Thanks for spending the morning of my birthday with me girls! I look forward to keeping in touch and not letting so much time pass this time!

On facebook a few weeks ago I held a contest for local families to show me their BSU Bronco love. The family with the most spirit won a free photo session. My friends the Hroma's were quick to post, and inevitably won! We had a great time running around campus, despite the random 102 degree weather and the fact that we couldn't get into the stadium.

I adore Boise. Every weekend there's something to do, and many community events happening all the time. This year's "Art in the Park" was another great event. Listening to the musical stylings of James Orr while chilling in the park with my niece and sister-in-law, sipping on smoothies and enjoying handmade crafts by Idaho's finest was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

One of the best things that came out of training for a marathon with Team in Training last fall was gaining a group of amazing close friends. When you run over 400 miles together in just a few months, suffer through blisters, chaffing, sore feet, etc... you get real close real fast. Tricia was one of the ladies that I met through team. She's amazing and so inspiring. A mother of two and she still found the time to raise $3200 for cancer research, oh, and do a little thing like run a marathon.

See, she's awesome!

Sadly her family moved to California last month. All because her husband has a great job. Sheesh, doesn't he know my friendship with his wife is more important? ;)
Before they left Tricia asked me to take some pictures of her two beautiful kids so she could have some memories of them in Idaho. I quickly said yes!

I also convinced her to hop in a few herself. When you're as gorgeous as she is, how can you not be in pictures?!

We met up at Java in downtown Boise and got some fun shots. She's a computer science engineer, so we wanted to incorporate her laptop and the laid back, eclectic feel of the coffee shop. The lighting was perfect!

There are few times as a photographer where I feel completely in my element, completely driven by passion, and completely connected to the subjects I'm shooting. I was blessed this past Sunday with just such a shoot.

I was contacted by Nikki, a paralegal in the Air Force, last week to see if I was available for a shoot. She had received my contact information in a round about way through an organization called Operation Love. (find out more about this great organization here.) She is being deployed to Iraq April 5th, and wanted to get pictures with her family before leaving. As a volunteer with oplove, I agree to take free pre-deployment photos and send a book of the images to the soldier overseas. I was more than happy to oblige.

We met in Mountain Home, a place I've never shot before, but I figured together we could come up with a few places. We started in a little field off the train tracks and got the family (Nikki's sister, niece and mom and dad were in town... great timing!) comfortable with the camera.

They are an unbelievably beautiful family! Such great spirits and personalities in this bunch.

After shooting in the field we decided to head up to the tracks to get a few shots in. As we were heading that way I asked if they were live tracks. Sure enough Jimmie (Nikki's husband) spotted a train making its way toward us. We all stood to the side and watched (and felt!) the train pass us by. It was amazingly powerful!
After the train passed we quickly took one photo and got off. We didn't want to take any chances on a second train coming by.

Nikki's dad had a few moments to place 2 pennies on the tracks before the train rushed by. We were all excited to see the outcome, having only heard about this being done. He found the pennies still on the tracks after the train passed and gave one to McKenzie (his 7 year old granddaughter) and one to Nikki. Nikki put it in her pocket and plans on keeping it with her at all times in Iraq. What a special memory that was made!

These three are magical together. Jimmie and Nikki shine with their love for each other and their 14 month old daughter Hailey. Nikki is such a strong woman, and is teaching her daughter such important values of family and country already.

We stole a few moments for just Jimmie and Nikki to get a few pictures of just the two of them.

Nikki's sister and niece are just too stinking cute.

We had to let Bentley get his picture taken too!

McKenzie was in heaven running around the park with the two dogs. So much energy... ahh to be 7 again.

I had such a lovely time meeting you and your family Nikki. You all taught me so much about love and life in the just the hour or so we spent together. I will keep you all in my prayers as you embark on this chapter of your life. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for putting your life on the line for our country. I am so thankful that people like you are willing to sacrifice in order to make a better life for others.

Joseph Taormina has been a friend of mine for a few years now. We met while working together at the Boys & Girl's Club a few summers ago, and bonded over art, the Beatles, and crazy kids doing crazy and cute things. He's spent the past 14 months living in Vancouver BC going to film school and mastering his craft of acting in film. He's an amazing talent and I was honored when he called asking me to take some headshots for him while he was visiting home this past week.
We met up downtown at my favorite go-to spot Saturday afternoon and caught up while snapping pics. He's going to be big.

This is perhaps one of my favorite shots to date. Sometimes everything just comes together and works like magic. The lighting took very little tweaking, and everything from the placement of his arms, to the expression on his face just works.

Painful Connections

I just had my headshots taken for Eagle Magazine (I'm a writer on their publications team) by a young man I had never met before. While setting up for my session, I noticed his shoes. They were the same shoes I wore to train for, and eventually complete, my marathon in October. I pointed this out. Here's how the conversation went:

Me: "Hey, I have those same shoes!"
Him: "Yeah? Don't you love them?"
Me: "Yes! I ran my first marathon in them in October. So know that they will hold up for you."
Him: "Wait, are you the staffer that wrote the story about the man who runs to raise money for people with cancer?"
Me: "YES! That's the group I trained and ran with! We train for endurance events in exchange for raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Have you heard of them?"
Him: "No. But my daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia in October."

SLAM.

Me: "Oh, I am so sorry to hear that! How old is your daughter?"
Him: "2."

DOUBLE SLAM

Stories like this are all too common. It breaks my heart to hear that his daughter is living her life in a hospital, hooked to machines and receiving medication that causes so much good, but so much damage in her little body. I hurt for his family, having to be strong, but having to deal with the unknown- what does this mean for her future, what does this mean for her family? I can't help but focus on the fact that she is the same age as my niece. Her father shared with me her blog that her mom is keeping as a journal. I visited it after he left, and sat with tears at my desk.

She instantly reminded me of my niece. How would I handle getting the news that my niece, this little bundle of love that I treasure so much, is sick? I pray that I never have to know. I pray that no other parent, aunt, grandparent, cousin, brother, sister, friend or otherwise will ever have to hear that someone they love is sick. I'm tired of it. I'm ready for the world to be rid of cancer.

This is why I train. I feel like I have to do something... anything. I feel like by raising this money, and staying focused on the task at hand, I can somehow make a small difference. And with the thousands of people across the nation who are making this same small difference, it adds up to one BIG difference.

Want to help a local duo realize their dreams? There’s an app for that.

Richard Johnson and Kelly Knopp are two creative entrepreneurs who are pooling their resources to create the company Fractured Work — designing software for iPhones, iPads, and iPods. I recently sat down with one half of the team, Richard Johnson (Kelly had an art opening), and got some insight into their company adventures.

How did Fractured Work begin?

Local artist Kelly Knopp had written a children’s book about five years ago and had gone through the traditional methods of trying to get a printed version published. He found that there were a lot of barriers to just get his book looked at, let alone considered for publication. He and I were talking about his book and I suggested I might be able to help him with the publishing process because he was more focused on his art that was showing in local galleries. The iPad was just about to be released, and we decided that we would take the risk and go completely around the publishing system and self-publish in an eBook. One of the first things we found is that there wasn’t a platform for eBooks that supported children’s content. So we designed our own children’s eBook reader and the first book that we published was “Monster Scribbles.” The second book that we’re publishing is a very cute story about a snail.

What has been the reaction from the market for your applications?

Pretty surprising. In our first ten days of sales for “Moster Scribbles” we hit the number four best selling application for iPhone and iPad worldwide. We went on the best sellers list in 78 countries, and managed to outpace some very popular books. To put it in perspective, the Twilight books and Dr. Seuss were on the list under us at the time.

Part of “Monster Scribbles” success is that it’s created in a visually compelling way. It’s not a simple illustration. It’s actually three-dimensional. Each page...

Eagle’s Got Talent
In the rising popularity of American Idol, there’s another program that’s producing and spotlighting great talent right here in our own community.

Arts West School for the Performing and Visual Arts is an NAAS accredited school that teaches grades 6-12 focusing on academic and arts curriculum in Eagle, Idaho. The school is passionate about providing an educational experience that empowers its students both academically and creatively. So while most teenagers are sitting at home watching GLEE and only wishing music was an integral part of their education, students at Arts West are experiencing just that.

Camille Avery, a 2009 graduate of Arts West, is a talented young woman who has benefited in a big way from her education and teachers at this unique school. Now a student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, she credits her opportunity to attend this program, one of the top in the nation, to her education at Arts West. “My teachers at Arts West valued me as an individual singer,” said Avery. I had the opportunity to practice my vocals four hours a day, all during school hours, on a one-on-one basis. I guarantee that’s what got me to where I am today.”

From a young age Avery knew a love of music. She belonged to many choirs while in elementary school and was a student and member of Opera Idaho from the ages of seven through twelve. She continued to study vocals with private tutors outside of schoolwork, but hadn’t had the opportunity to perform solo. She had been hearing rumors about Arts West, and was interested in a school that emphasized individual opportunities to discover their own voice. Through a private donor and scholarships, Avery’s dream of attending Arts West came to fruition her freshman year of high school.

Traveling and performing with a group ensemble, and working on her own individual voice, immediately became the highlight of Avery’s high school education. “I was still receiving a great academic education, but I was also learning what I really needed to know in order to grow as an artist,” said Avery. “One thing they emphasize at Arts West is that it’s up to the individual how much they going to get out of their education. You will get help and lessons from your teachers, but if you aren’t willing to practice and really work at your craft, you aren’t going to succeed. You have to value what the teachers are giving you, and if you do, you will be successful.”

Avery deeply valued the insight her teachers provided her. After applying to two of the top conservatories on the East Coast, she and another student from Arts West were invited for a live audition. Through a school fundraiser Avery and her schoolmate, along with her schoolmate’s mom, were able to afford the trip to Boston for a once in a lifetime opportunity to audition with two of the top conservatories in the nation. Proving that it is a small world, the founder of Arts West, Justin Nielson, had a brother who lived in Boston and he allowed the three to stay in his home during the audition process. “The entire process was pretty crazy,” said Avery. “From getting the money together, to getting stuck in Boston for three extra days. It was in February, when the East Coast was experiencing crazy snowstorms, and we couldn’t get out. But it was a great adventure, and one I’ll never forget.”

True to her humble nature, Avery describes her auditions in both Boston and New York City as “horrifying” and “not at all good,” but of course her potential spoke volumes, and both schools loved her and invited her to be a student at their respective conservatories. “I didn’t get a good vibe from New York,” said Avery. “So I didn’t love the idea of living there. Boston offered me only a sixty-five percent scholarship, and New York was offering more aid, but I wanted to go to Boston.” After applying for additional aid from the New England Conservatory of Music, she received an extra scholarship, but it was not enough to afford...

Jeff and Meegan Yarnall, owners of the two Meridian Dutch Bros. stands, opened their first location on Overland Road in July, 2007 and their Franklin and Linder location in November that same year. Their Dutch Love Distribution Centers quickly became a vital part of the Meridian Community. “We at Dutch Bros. have a culture,” said Jeff Yarnall, “and it’s one we want to share with other businesses. ‘Love all, serve all’.”

Since beginning their franchise model in 1999, Dutch Bros. has never closed a store and has seen nothing but growth since they started with their pushcart stand18 years ago. This is not surprising due to the simple fact that people absolutely love a good cup of coffee, and even more so, a great atmosphere in which to enjoy it. Unlike your “traditional” coffee house, Dutch Bros. doesn’t have the typical environment with oversized chairs and couches to lounge in while enjoying your cup of joe, but it does house its own unique atmosphere which keeps customers happy and returning. Travis Boersma, a founding Dutch brother said about his company, “We’re about customers and employees. Our method of growth has been growing with the right people in the right areas. It’s got to work well for everyone, or it doesn’t work. We work hard to keep that focus.”

When you first pull up to any Dutch Bros. location you’ll probably first notice the music. “Music is the lifeblood of our coffee,” said Jeff. “Tunes will always be pumpin’. Our employees begin their day in the groove with a cup of coffee and their music pumping.” The second thing that stands out about Dutch Bros. is the smile on every baristas face. Every guest is greeted with a smile and a genuine inquiry as to how their day is going. The employees are having a good time at work, and they strive to spread the cheer. It is part of the “Dutch Creed,” a promise that each employee lives by. “To look at the sunny side of everything, and make your optimism come true…”

“Every single customer has to leave satisfied with a smile on their face. Baristas offer high fives, sympathy, empathy, and if necessary, a free cup of joe to make their day. It’s that simple,” said Jeff. “You can teach anyone to make coffee, but I hire based off of personality. You can’t train personality. You either have it, or you don’t.”

Saving Lives One Mile at A Time
One Man’s Journey to Beat Cancer, for Himself and Others.

Did you know that one out of every 300 children will develop cancer before their 20th birthday? The majority of these cancers will be blood cancers. Every day, 46 kids and their families find out they have cancer, and although researchers have made great strides in progress, 35 percent of these kids will die. That’s the bad news. But there is good news too – the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is here to help!

LLS is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood-related cancers – as well as improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Their efforts are paying off in increased survival rates, finding better drugs (with fewer side effects) and increased attention to the need for advancement in medicine for these ailments.

Byron Sliger, a Treasure Valley resident, was diagnosed March 6, 2004, with Follicular Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Told it had progressed to stage 3 and was incurable, Byron set out on a mission to change his daily habits and beat it. Now a hero in his own right, Byron is running marathons and completing triathlons while fundraising for the LLS through Team in Training.

Byron, can you tell me a little bit about what Follicular Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma is?

It’s a blood cancer. Mine is an indolent (slow-growing) cancer that affects B-Cell Lymphocytes. I have 3 areas with the cancer in my body; it’s just there and it’s growing slowly. So they don’t perform any treatments until I get a symptom.

Were you diagnosed because of symptoms?

Yes. I was diagnosed when I discovered a lump on the side of my neck. It would get firm, then maybe a couple of days later would go away. It kept doing that off and on. Sometimes it wouldn’t do anything for awhile and then it would get firm again. After six months of dealing with that, I went to get a complete physical. The doctor didn’t find anything and didn’t actually notice the lump. At the end of the exam he asked me if there was anything else and I pointed out the lump. He felt it and told me he would like to get a needle biopsy done. After the biopsy, he called me a couple days later and said it was positive for Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Once diagnosed, what were the next steps?

Non Hodgkin’s is a “sit and wait” condition. You don’t begin treatments until there is a symptom and I was lucky enough to go 5 years before getting a symptom. In 2009...

Some days I wake up craving my camera and the outdoors. All I want to do is walk around outside and take pictures of nothing in particular, and for no other reason than to just create. Last Saturday was one of those days. I met a friend and her daughter downtown to walk the holiday market. We spent the morning enjoying the crisp weather and warm coffee, each others company, and the freedom to click the shutter when the moment struck me.

One of my assignments for Meridian Central Magazine was to highlight a community member who is doing amazing things. Without hesitation I recommended Byron. A fellow Team in Training teammate and cancer SURVIVOR, he is one of the coolest and most inspiring people I know.
We met on the Boise Greenbelt to take a few pictures of him running in his TnT jersey and had some great conversations.
I would tell you all the ins and outs of this amazing guy and his story, but you'll just have to pick up the magazine from stands in November to find it all out! Jake did not want to have his photos taken.

His mom promised him that if he was willing to have me take a handful of pics she wouldn't print a million copies, but she did want at least one good 8x10.

I have met few people as genuinely kind and friendly as Nathan and his family. We had a great time snapping a few photos of Nathan for his senior pics in "freak alley". (an alley devoted to graffiti artists in downtown Boise)
Nathan's pictures were taken in exchange for a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Nathan's mom is training for the marathon and fundraising alongside myself! I love when I have the opportunity to share such amazing moments with good people.
